Headwrap Expo brings fashion, faith, culture to Dearborn

DEARBORN, MI UK- people of varying background and faith came together recntly at the second annual headwrap Expo in the city.

Head coverings across cultures and religions were

celebrated, whether Muslim, African, Sikh, Jewish or
Christian, at the expo June 8 at the Ford Community &
Performing Arts Center.
The event was founded by anthropologist Zarinah El-Amin
Naeem, 34, of Detroit, who organized the first Headwrap

Expo last year in Dearborn to encourage others to

recognize that head coverings expand across a broad
spectrum and are not only specific to Muslims.
“The goal of the headwrap expo is to use the global art of
headwrapping to encourage individuals to transcend
barriers and get to know others in our society. Ultimately,
we hope to be a vehicle in the creation of a global culture
of love and understanding,” she said in an email to the
Press & Guide.

The day’s activities included shopping, “styling corners,”

an interfaith panel and several fashion shows.

Naeem is expanding the movement's success to New
York, where an inaugural Headwrap Expo is planned for the
fall.
